2. AGM (Absorbed Glass Matt) Batteries

Typical brands normally stocked are Rolls, for peak discharge (best on the market), low self-discharge and no problems with sulphating.
Suitable for: starting engines and actually anthing that requires high peak current.

Rolls AGM’s are also deep cycle. So can be installed in a boat as service batteries.
As an example…. if a large enough battery was installed to supply all power requirements including 220v (via inverter). Being AGM’s they can be charged at twice their Ah capacity. If a booster charge system was installed aswell, a boat could sit in a bay enjoying all the normal facilities without a generator running most of every day. Say, every 3 days the main engine could be run for a few hours and the battery would be full again.

This is in most cases, but not all. So you should call and see how your particular system can be improved.

Dews Marine is able to supply you with everything needed to ensure your solar system is up and running correctly. Here is our selection of inverters and battery chargers we stock.

Inverters:

We recommend the use of Outback inverters, for durability and adaptability.

As an example, five 3Kw inverter/chargers in parallel, will give 15Kw continuous 220V pure sine wave and charge with up to 400A. An AGM battery of 400Ah could be fully charged in less than 1 hour. Outback inverters will automatically start AC and DC generators, controlled by battery voltage and/or consumption.

Outback FX are the next generation in advanced power management. Each is a DC to AC sinewave inverter, battery charger and AC transfer switch housed within a tough die-cast aluminum chassis.

Suitable for: properties and buildings, rewable energy and emergency power and boats.

Battery Chargers:

CTEK Battery Chargers
CTEK battery chargers are perfectly suited for charging all types of lead-acid, Gel and AGM batteries. A CTEK charger is easy to use and very reliable. It can be connected to a battery for an extended period gently maintained by pulses. The charger is electronic safe, which means you do not normally need to remove the battery from the vehicle when charging. In addition it is spark free, reverse polarity and short circuit protected CTEK battery chargers are approved for outdoor use. Also some can be used as a DC power supply for applications such as swimming pool lights and use in areas of humidity and extreme temperatures.
The following are the CTEK chargers we normally stock:

D250S

D250S.jpg
This charger is to charge and maintain all the other batteries onboard (ie. engine batteries, generator battery, bow thruster battery, anchor battery etc) from the service battery.

Normally all these batteries are charged when the engine is on, via a blocking diode (the regulator of a normal boats alternator cannot look after correct charging of a battery it cant see (ie monitor battery voltage in order to adjust its output). So what actually happens is, the alternator output goes up to 14.4/28.8v and stays there until the engine is turned off.
This is really bad for the battery. Also, batteries along way from this charging source may never reach full charge voltage.

A battery, in order to have a good and happy life, needs to be charged to its rated charge voltage (80{963594f65ff217f1e655a17e7cc09ddde682a2d3c329f1348f622a212b203827} charged), then “absorbtion mode“,(depending on how big the battery is, it needs to be kept at that voltage until fully charged). After which, no more charging (not float etc). Maintenance mode (if the voltage drops below 12.9/25.8v a pulse to keep it full without overcharging or using water (on wet batteries)).

The D250S is a 6 stage charger, 1-desulphating mode, 2-softstart chargine mode, 3-bulk charging mode, 4-absorption mode, 5-float mode and 6-maintenance mode. The last mode will look after the battery without using water (on wet batteries) or over charging. Keeping the battery in perfect and fully charged condition, ready for the next power demand.

These little in-expensive chargers can be installed in the battery box next to the battery its charging (intrinsically safe and water resistant). It has a temperature sensor so perfect charge control can be achieved. It can be connected to any appropriately sized DC cable connected to the service battery. As each battery bank has its own D250S. All are looked after individually to their separate and different requirements.

End result is, better battery efficiency and longer life (eventually cost saving).

Also, no need for chargers with more than one output nor blocking diodes. Keep the service battery charged and all the others are automatically looked after by D250S.

D250S DUAL

ctek_d250s_dual.jpg
This battery charger is a 6 stage DC to DC charger with up to 2 source inputs (ie alternator or service battery and some solar panels (with maximum power point tracking on solar input). Otherwise, its the same as the D250S.

NEW PRODUCT.
D250TS

CTEK_D250S.jpg
This battery charger is principly to charge the engine battery from the service battery. As the engine battery is only very slightly discharged by a starting of the engine, it only takes a few minutes to become fully charged again. Therefore this charger would be doing nothing most of the time.

12v is fed back to the service battery 0-12v section. This battery then supplies all 12v DC needs (ie VHF radio, music etc), and can be used to start the generator. So, no need for droppers, 12v battery for generator nor its 220v charger.

Cheaper and better. Engine batteries are always fully charged and in perfect condition (without using the water (on wet batteries)). Even when the engine is off and no 220v supply. This means, actually the engine batteries could even be smaller. Another plus is that the engine battery will only ever get a very small amount of discharge. As its life expectancy depends on depth of discharge and cycles of charge discharge. Easy to see how much longer these batteries will last. (More cost saving).

CTEK SMART PASS

CTEK_SMARTPASS_topview.jpg

Here’s something completely new. Its called SmartPass. Normally, when a boat is in navigation, there is quite a lot of DC current being consumed. (ie. fridges, lights, pumps Nav equipment etc). Well this power normally comes from the service battery, which is being charged by an alternator from one of the motors. What this means is that normally this battery never reaches full charge condition. Apart from being bad for the battery, when you stop, your battery is only 60 or 70{963594f65ff217f1e655a17e7cc09ddde682a2d3c329f1348f622a212b203827} charged. Would be much better to start your anchorage with a full battery.

Smart Pass gives you this option. It passed perfect direct current to services and charges the battery seperately till full, then goes into maintenance mode. So, when you stop, your battery is in perfect condition.
